A little Church for the Churchy Folks

I love when a show catches me off guard in the best way possible. With me finally adding BET+ to my line of streaming services, I’m gonna get my money’s worth. First it was the Mrs Pat Show and now I’ve found another gem. I stumbled across Churchy, the new BET+ comedy from KevOnStage! Y’all, I’m bingeing it as we speak—I’m about six episodes in—and let me tell you, this show is so cute! It’s funny, it’s relatable, and best of all, it’s something I could actually watch with my teenage daughter (which is rare these days).
KevOnStage, who I’ve been following for years, has a signature brand of comedy that’s clean but still grown. He doesn’t shy away from real-life topics, but you won’t find anything vulgar or over-the-top. If you’re “churchy but not too churchy,” you’ll get a kick out of this show. However, if you’re extra saved and sanctified, you might clutch your pearls once or twice—but that’s on you.
The Premise: A Church Drama…But Make It Funny
The show follows a young pastor who’s been working in his father’s church, thinking he’s about to get his own congregation. But instead of being appointed to lead one of the family’s new churches, the position goes to—wait for it—a 71-year-old pastor. Sir?! Usually, pastors are retiring at that age, not stepping into brand-new roles! From there, the drama (and comedy) unfolds.
The humor in Churchy is so millennial, and I mean that in the best way. If you grew up in the Black church, especially as a preacher’s kid or grandkid (like me), you will see yourself and your family in this show. From the shady church members to the way the youth talk and interact—it’s spot on. There were definitely some cringy moments, but not because the writing was bad—more like, “Whew, this is too real!”
A Breath of Fresh Air
One thing I truly appreciate about Churchy is that it feels fresh. So many shows these days are either heavy dramas (Power, The Chi, Sisters), reality TV, or reboots of things we’ve already seen. This show gives us something different—a well-written, high-quality comedy with heart. It even gave me slight Good News (UPN throwback!) vibes. Anybody remember that one? It didn’t last long, which is why I’m a little nervous about Churchy. I don’t want this show to disappear before people even get a chance to watch it.

The KevOnStage Effect
KevOnStage has been grinding for a long time—his comedy, skits, and podcasts (Here’s the Thing with That Chick Angel is a fave) have built him a loyal audience. It’s inspiring to see so many millennials stepping into their light and creating opportunities like this. This is our time, and I love seeing creators like Kev making moves.
Final Thoughts: Give Churchy a Chance!

If you have BET+, do yourself a favor and check out Churchy. I have been cracking up watching it, and I’d hate for it to get canceled just because people didn’t know about it. Right now, season one is out, but I haven’t heard any updates about a season two. Hopefully, BET+ gives it another round because it’s truly a gem.
Let me know if you’ve watched it yet! Are you a KevOnStage fan? And if you’ve seen it, what do you think? Drop a comment and let’s talk about it!
