Jingle Jangle A Holiday Netflix Film

Updated: Jul 1, 2024

As a huge fan of Phylicia Rashad, my family and I eagerly anticipated the release of the Netflix movie "Jingle Jangle." I've admired Rashad since I was five years old, thanks to her iconic role as Claire Huxtable on "The Cosby Show." I always loved seeing a Black mother with a successful career, a healthy marriage, and the utmost class, all while being beautiful inside and out.

These values have stayed with me, even as television has evolved over the years. In 2024, "ratchet" reality TV dominates the airwaves, and family-based sitcoms like "The Cosby Show" seem to have fallen by the wayside. Although I don't allow my children to watch these types of programs, I'm still holding strong to the values that Mrs. Huxtable instilled in me.

Written and directed by David E. Talbert, known for his stage plays and films, "Jingle Jangle" is a fun musical set in an imaginary world. The story follows a once successful toy maker who has been betrayed by his apprentice, leading to a life of despair. His luck begins to change when his bright young granddaughter arrives on his doorstep. Together, they embark on an adventure involving a magical invention that holds the power to change their lives forever.

I am not going to give the movie away at all but I will say that it was refreshing to see a brand new Christmas story with actors, singers, and dancers that looked like me. We made a family night of it and as we watched the lively cast perform, I couldn't help but smile as my daughter excitedly pointed out the actors, singers, and dancers who looked like her. Even my father, who is usually the family movie critic, found himself also enjoying the songs & plot.

The music in the film really caught my attention. I am a musical girly. I was in the Drama Club in highschool and musicals were definitely my favorite. The orignal music in 'Jingle Jangle' played a significant role in conveying the joy of the holiday season. Lisa Davina Phillip's powerful and soulful voice, was definitely the break out voval star for me. Her powerful and soulful voice had me googling her after the movie was over because i wanted to hear more.

Another vocal highlight was none other than Anika Noni Rose, known for her roles in 'The Princess and the Frog' and 'Dreamgirls.' Despite not having as much screen time in 'Jingle Jangle,' her beautiful singing voice still shone through, it reminded me of her enchanting performance as Princess Tiana. Her powerful and soulful voice added another layer of her portrayal of the toymaker's estranged adult daughter.

Something that was pleasantly surprising and unexpected was Forest Whitaker as the toymaker. I have been a fan for years. Forest is an amazing actor, but I did not expect him to sing. They even got the legend himself to sing a couple of songs, and surprisingly, he didn't do bad. It made my heart smile to see him take on the role and be so dedicated.

In conclusion, 'Jingle Jangle' is a family-friendly, fun-filled film featuring soulful music, great acting, and stunning visuals. As a self-proclaimed Christmas girl who loves everything about the holiday season, I was destined to love this movie. Being able to share the experience with my daughter made it even more special. I highly recommend adding this charming film to your must-watch list. With its heartwarming themes and unforgettable characters, 'Jingle Jangle' has all the ingredients to become a timeless holiday classic."
