Mommy Needs a Break Too: Self-Care in the Midst of Motherhood

Attention, fellow moms and caregivers: it's time to grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, sharing is caring), kick back, and let's talk self-care. In the ever-changing landscape of motherhood, it's easy to forget about ourselves as we pour all our love and energy into our families. But my personal journey with postpartum depression taught me that self-care is not just a buzzword—it's a necessity. Join me as I share my story and offer some practical tips that have helped me rediscover the woman behind the mommy mask.

Emotional Connection: The Power of Self-Care

Allow me to take you back to a time when self-care felt like a distant memory. I recall a time when I was experiencing postpartum depression, and self-care took a backseat to the demands of motherhood and the challenges of recovery. I struggled with hair loss due to COVID-19, and the simple pleasures of getting my makeup and nails done felt like distant memories.

Although I was still taking care of my basic needs, like showering, I found myself going through the motions, putting everyone else's needs before my own. I wasn't taking long, relaxing bubble baths, meditating, or doing any of the things that once brought me joy. I was on auto-pilot, and my sense of self was slipping away.

My therapist recognized my struggle and challenged me to carve out time for myself—even if it was just a few minutes each day. So, I chose to dance. I'd put on my favorite music and let the rhythm carry me away. For those 15 to 20 minutes, I wasn't a mother, a caregiver, or a woman battling depression; I was simply me. Dancing reminded me of the person I was beneath the layers of responsibility and hardship. It was a turning point in my journey to healing and self-discovery.

My personal experience taught me that self-care isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. And it doesn't have to be elaborate or time-consuming. Sometimes, it's as simple as allowing yourself a moment to breathe, dance, and remember who you are.

Practical Tip: Unleashing Your Inner Chef with TikTok Recipes

One surprising source of relaxation and enjoyment I've discovered is trying new recipes, thanks to TikTok. I've fallen into the rabbit hole of deliciousness, finding inspiration for dishes like smothered turkey wings or this really delicious spinach, chicken, and crab meat dip. Exploring these recipes has become a fun and rewarding way to break from my daily routine, and it's also provided an opportunity for quality time with my kids during dinner and movie nights.

TikTok has been my go-to source for creative culinary ideas, and I can't wait to keep expanding my recipe repertoire. Whether it's a comforting meal for the family or a delightful appetizer to share with friends, exploring new recipes has become an essential part of my self-care routine.

Trying out new recipes has not only become a fun and relaxing activity but has also allowed me to tap into my creative side. I've discovered a passion for experimenting with different ingredients, flavors, and techniques, which has expanded my culinary horizons.

Among the constant hustle of responsibilities and the seemingly endless list of tasks, I've discovered that carving out time for self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. It's like an oxygen mask on an airplane—you have to put yours on first before you can help others. In my journey to prioritize self-care, I've found some simple yet effective practices that have made all the difference.

The Mommy Juggle

I get it. I have two kids of my own—a teenager and a toddler—and on top of that, I am the primary caregiver for my mother. The days blur into each other, filled with school runs, doctor's appointments, and endless errands. It's a non-stop cycle of caring for everyone around me, leaving little time for self-care. Within the chaos, I've discovered that prioritizing my well-being is crucial to effectively care for those around me.

Embracing Self-Care

As I've adapted to the demands of my various responsibilities, I've found that embracing self-care is vital to my well-being. It doesn't have to be extravagant or time-consuming; sometimes, it's the small moments of pampering and rest that make all the difference. Here are a few simple self-care practices that I've incorporated into my daily routine:

1. Morning Meditation/Reading/Journaling

A few years ago, someone suggested I wake up 30 minutes earlier than usual to journal every day as a way to start my morning. Although it's a great idea, I often find myself hitting the snooze button, craving those extra 30 minutes of rest. Recently, I found a new way to incorporate this practice into my routine. On my Self Care Sundays, I dedicate 30 minutes to either journaling, meditating, or reading something that relaxes me.

 2. DIY Mani/Pedi

In 2024, professional pampering services can be pretty expensive. While we all deserve the royal treatment, for some of us, regular visits to the salon just aren't in the budget. Over time, I've become quite skilled at DIY mani/pedis, and sometimes I even include my daughter in the fun. Additionally, there are some fantastic press-on nails available nowadays that look just as good as salon-done nails!

3. Quality Time

Speaking of quality time, I genuinely love spending it with my family. Sundays are perfect for cherishing moments of togetherness with loved ones. Whether it's a family movie night, a backyard picnic, or snuggling on the couch, these moments are priceless. Recently, we had a movie night at home where we watched Inside Out 2, enjoyed a spread of snacks, and played with playdough. The kids loved it, and I got to spend quality time with them.

4. Unplug

In a digital world filled with constant notifications, taking time to unplug and disconnect is essential. Close out social media, turn off your phone, step away from screens, and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment.

5. At Home Spa

Who says you need to book a spa day to indulge in relaxation? Treat yourself to a DIY spa session at home. Draw a warm bubble bath, light some candles, and unwind with a good book or soothing music. By incorporating these self-care practices into your routine, you can experience the transformative power of investing in your well-being and embracing moments of relaxation amidst the constant hustle of life.

 6. Prayer

Prayer has been a powerful tool that has helped me through some of my most challenging times. While some may liken prayer to meditation, for me, there's a clear distinction. When I meditate, I become one with the universe, focusing on relaxation and breathing techniques. However, when I pray, I engage in a deeply personal and intimate conversation with God. Through prayer, I surrender my worries, express gratitude, and ask for guidance and clarity. Incorporating prayer into my self-care routine has not only strengthened my faith but also provided me with solace and inner peace.

 Balancing Act

Balancing the demands of motherhood with self-care is a constant work in progress. It's okay to feel overwhelmed at times, but remember that you deserve to prioritize your well-being. By carving out moments of rest and rejuvenation, you'll not only recharge your own batteries but also be better equipped to care for those around you.

Remember, Mama:

  • You are enough.

  • It's okay to ask for help.

  • Self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity.
