Reliving Whitney: A Diva's Magic on the Big Screen

Updated: Dec 23, 2024

Last night was seriously a whole vibe! I got to watch Whitney Houston's concert at Cinemark

theater and it was like stepping into a time machine. It took me back to my aunt's house,

where I first fell in love with her music. Seeing her on the big screen was everything! I couldn't

help but feel all the feels—admiration, nostalgia, and total fangirl vibes. Whitney's talent, style,

and grace were off the charts! So, let's dive into all the reasons why she's a forever superstar in

my heart.

Okay, I was "that" person who walked in late to the concert, I know, I know. I

blame it on my need for some overpriced movie theater popcorn! So, I found myself

walking into theater as Whitney Houston's beautiful voice echoed through the

theater. Trust me, there's nothing like making a grand entrance to a concert, right?

Sitting there in the theater, surrounded by Whitney Houston's music, I couldn't help but

compare it to my childhood memories. Back then, I was just a kid watching the concert on

pay-per-view, completely starstruck and dancing around my aunt's house. But now, as an

adult, I found myself focusing on the details of the performance. The skill of the saxophone

players, the emotion in Whitney's voice, and the overall magic of the moment.

And then, my all-time favorite Whitney Houston song, 'Saving All My Love for You,' started

playing. I excitedly leaned over to my date and whispered, 'This is my song! My absolute

favorite Whitney song!' We both couldn't help but laugh as my date asked, 'So, your favorite

Whitney song is about a side chick?' I mean, when you put it that way, it does sound kinda

messed up. But that's the power of Whitney's voice—no matter how questionable the lyrics

might be, she sings with such passion and talent that you can't help but love the song anyway.

Plus, it's my ultimate girls' night karaoke song choice—even if I know the lyrics are a

little morally questionable, I can't help but sing along.

One of the most memorable moments from the concert was when Kirk Whalum took the stage

with Whitney Houston for 'Saving All My Love for You.' As his saxophone solo filled the theater,

I couldn't help but be transported back to my childhood, when I first fell in love with the rich,

soulful sound of the sax. Watching Kirk and Whitney perform together was truly a highlight,

and I remember thinking, 'This is it! This is the moment that ignited my love for the

saxophone.'

As an adult, I found myself watching the concert with a different lens—one that considers the

logistics, budget, and behind-the-scenes effort that goes into putting together such an

incredible show. It's a bit like re-watching 'Home Alone' as an adult and suddenly noticing

details, like the electric bill for that massive house. For this concert, I couldn't

help but wonder about the costs of hiring world-class musicians like Kirk Whalum, the

difficulties of directing the show, and the family involvement, from Whitney's mother to her

sister-in-law. It's definitely a shift in perspective, where you can still appreciate the magic of

Whitney Houston while also admiring the hard work and dedication that went into making the

concert a reality.

Now, here's a fun fact for you: the concert we're talking about happened back in 1994, in Durban, South Africa. I was 9 years old and in the 4th grade. Whitney was just 31 years old, but she was making waves as the first big-name Western artist to hit the stage after apartheid ended and Nelson Mandela was elected as president. Talk about a boss move! Not only was she slaying the music game, but she was also representing hope and freedom during an important time in South Africa's history. As I watched the remastered concert footage in the theater, I couldn't help but be amazed by everything Whitney accomplished and the impact her music still has today.

As the concert progressed, I noticed the atmosphere in the theater becoming more lively. More

and more people were clapping, singing along, and even dancing in their seats—it was like we

were all connected through Whitney's music. That's the thing about her songs, they're

timeless. Even though music has evolved in different directions since her era, Whitney's

classics still hold a special place in our hearts. The fact that we're still celebrating her music in

theaters, long after her passing, is a testament to the lasting impact she had on the world.

Now, I have to confess something; I did sneak a few pictures during the concert. I know, I

know, you're not supposed to do that in a movie theater. But c'mon, it felt like a live concert,

and I just had to capture those moments for my memories! How often do you get to

experience Whitney Houston on the big screen? Honestly, someone needs to make this

concert available for streaming, I'd gladly pay for it on Amazon Prime or any other platform.

Please, Whitney's estate, make it happen!

And just like that, the concert ended with a bang! As the credits rolled, I couldn't help but feel

like I'd just been on a ride with Whitney Houston herself. But the party ain't over—her

music, her legacy, and her unforgettable spirit live on in all of us. So, here's to the queen of

pop, who showed us that true talent never fades, and true divas never go out of style.

And if you missed the chance to catch the concert in theaters on October 23, you're in luck! It's playing again on October 27, giving fans around the world another opportunity to witness the power of Whitney's performance and celebrate this pivotal moment in history.
